I understand there are precautions to take to increase your safety on the water: 1) don't eat or drink on the water or after direct contact with the water; use hand sanitizer first; 2) avoid water aerosols and consumption of the water during water sports; 3) rinse of you, your equipment and your pets after water exposure; 4) immediately report poor water quality to local officials; 5) be mindful of water runoff wherever you are in watershed areas, ie. dispose of liquids appropriately! and 6) get involved in the solutions! That involves everyone!

This from American Rivers....taken from Bozeman Daily Chronicle discussing Yellowstone River, "Rivers are a lot like people. In order to survive, they need to be able to breathe, for a river like the Maumee, in this case, breathing means moving within its floodplain."

However, over the years, with the Corps' consent, landowners along the Maumee, in this case, have used a wide array of methods to keep the river from washing away their land or their houses.

With the epic flooding now, especially all along the New Madrid,in its rivers, tributaries, levees breaching in Missouri, it shows how these rivers are desparately 'yearning to breathe free,' once again.

Funny, after the levees were installed and the flood walls went up on Tennessee Blvd., and the vegetation and trees removed...the best management practices were to plant more trees to replace the ones being removed. NOW, we need to remove trees again with the "potential" to damage the levees? Ridiculous.

Congrats Abby on Save Maumee 6th Annual Earth Day festival! I am really concerned about all the plantings you pictured on the river banks Sunday tagged with spray paint! WTF! Is the USACE hell bent on destroying, removing all vegetation previously growing on all banks, as well as what has just been planted? According to post from FortWayne.com Mary Jane Slaton “This is something we've been told by the Army Corps (of Engineers) we must do,"the Corps says the trees restrict access to the levee embankment, which makes it harder to assess its condition" So this is really about just making it easier for the USACE to access the river banks, "not a suggestion that the levee is unstable or is going to collapse” Slaton emphasized.

The 10k-20k to control erosion was not included in the bid because they never intended to follow the erosion plan in the first place....this seems obvious.

Terry Smith.....what do you think now while the Gulf disaster is still playing out.... are you still for 'drill baby drill', you might not be after you read this study by the Russians, they seem to have a better handle on the disastrous affects of the worst environmental disaster caused by man.

A dire report prepared for President Medvedev by Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources is warning today that the British Petroleum (BP) oil and gas leak in the Gulf of Mexico is about to become the worst environmental catastrophe in all of human history threatening the entire eastern half of the North American continent with “total destruction”.
